Law students under supervision offer advice, any necessary legal assistance and representation to all those who cannot a lawyer or legal aid.

The Children's Legal Centre is a unique, independent national charity concerned with law and policy affecting children and young people. They have set up an advocacy scheme for young children/young people.

Amicus are a charity that assist with death reprieve cases. Students have the opportunity to be trained and subsequently involved in these cases.

Also launched this year this is completely different to the previous project, law mentoring – which demonstrates the wide ranging and diverse projects we have and the groups of people we help. Amicus is a charity which provides free legal representation for US prisoners on death row using volunteers.

A death-row case, the outcome of which has not yet been reached but Amicus has completed their involvement in the case now and the client has been appointed with a US firm to represent them –

 The king’s students contributed around 5% to the final project which has enabled the US firm to have a head start on identifying the issues for appeal. Their assignments related to the motions during the trial and this was the most difficult part of the case.

Three students have formed an Amicus committee on campus, which will assist with the administration of Amicus in the North, and raise awareness of the work Amicus does.

In today’s society, access to legal aid is extremely limited, whilst advice needs are rapidly increasing. European Law Monitor is a non-political, not-for-profit, information service that aims to provide citizens and organisations across Europe with the ability to find and track new EU proposals, and to make it easier for interested parties to express their views to European legislators during the legislative process. The School of Law has a number of students assisting with reserach and information at this project.

The Innocence Project provides students with the unique and exciting opportunity to investigate cases of suspected wrongful convictions where a prisoner has exhausted the initial appeals process.

Students are able to train and work with a range of external agencies including Trading Standards, Portsmouth Mediation Service and as Special Constables.

In partnership with Bristol CAB we offer members of the public an opportunity to obtain basic independent legal advice on their family law problems.

The Free Legal Advice Centre is open on  Monday evenings and sees clients by appointment.  The Centre operates a written advice-only service during term time. All students are supervised by a solicitor or advocate, but have full control over their cases. Under the supervision of Senior Partners from Talbot Solicitors, students can offer advice on a wide range of every day legal matters. The clinic is completely free and available on a drop-in basis on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The students are law graduates studying the vocational stage of training for solicitors, the Legal Practice Course. The practical experience will help the students develop essential client care skills for a career practicing law.

Nottingham FRU is a branch of the London-based charity Free Representation Unit and provides representation to clients in the Employment Tribunal.

This joint project between Herabans Kaur and the Law Society Pro Bono Secretary provides students with the opportunity to help to raise funds for a variety of local and national causes.

The Glasgow Caledonian University Innocence Project (GCU-IP) is the first dedicated student-led Innocence Project in Scotland, a pro bono legal clinic which teaches law through exposure to 'live-clients'.

Students advise clients under the supervision of supervising law firms. Advice is provided in areas of law such as employment, landlord and tenant disputes, freehold and leasehold issues, personal injury, contracts, consumer and transactions.

This is a new project we are hoping to run next year under KCLprobono – it will be our 8 Th new project.  It is in the initial stages of set –up now, but will probably be in place by September in order to expand KCL Pro Bono even further.

We have now joined with an existing Innocence project at Strathclyde in the Department of Journalism. While the initial numbers of law students that can get involved are small, we hope to expand this over time.

UoLIP is an educational project promoting enterprise skills for undergraduate students, through investigative work into real cases where wrongful convictions are suspected.

We offer an advice service following referral of a Land Registry application to its Adjudicator Service. The Land Registry includes our leaflet in its referral package. Disputes can cover issues such as adverse possession, easements and rights of way, and beneficial ownership.

One-module course involving students on placement at local Citizen's Advice Bureau. Assessment by log, presentation and report reflecting on personal experiences and developing an academic legal theme relevant to the work of the CAB.

The Law Clinic provides over 140 students with the opportunity to put their legal knowledge into practice every year. Members recieve training by Burges Salmon LLP (a leading local law firm) and continued support throughout their membership.

We have been in pro bono for nearly 10 years. Our students undertake a final year Clinic module by working with local community advice centres.

Currently we are working with Citizens Advice and Law Centre and Derbyshire Housing Aid, partners in the only successful CLAC in the country.

Our second year students have the opportunity to train as CAB advisors and undertake advice work. Through Clinic, we have also given advice and legal assistance to the local Victim Support.

The Law Clinic offers a free legal service run by second year law students under the supervision of experienced solicitors to anyone with a legal problem around Hertfordshire.

This is a new project set up this year – it is very closely associated with law mentoring but with one key difference – it involves pairing a KCL student with an AS or A Level Law student at Kingsbury high school. The Student Law Clinic at Dundee University is a new initiative which opened its doors on 31 January 2011 in the first of two main phases of activity. The initial focus is on advice-giving, building towards offering a representation service in due course.

Students can work alongside other volunteers to provide a befriending service to asylum seekers in Leeds.

Students work in pairs to interview a client and then provide advice in writing, under the supervision of our Supervising Solicitor.

About the Legal Advice Centre

The Centre is staffed by Law students under the supervision of qualified staff.  All Student Advisers are Final year Law students professionally trained to provide help with a range of issues, including:

The Centre will be run in partnership with various organisations around Hull including the Citizens' Advice Bureau, Hull and East Riding Councils and the legal firms Hamers and Stamp Jackson Proctor.

Around 25 students are selected to participate in three legal advice clinics around London by taking minutes during client meetings, undertaking follow-up researches and drafting documents. The University of Glamorgan's Law School has a number of students working as volunteer advisers at Citizens Advice Bureaux in South Wales, as well as one member of staff working as a specialist volunteer and others acting as  trustees of a local bureau. 

The KCL Legal Clinic is a new probono scheme run by students, aimed at supporting the legal needs of all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

We currently have 10 advisers trained in collaboration with Speechly Bircham -

- The clinic can help with a wide variety of legal issues such as: -Dispute Resolution-Entrepreneurial Services (i.e. supporting new business start-ups with contracts, IP rights etc-Property (tenants and leases)-Consumer Standards-Employment.

As the project is our newest – it is still its first stages but it already very popular and a number of students have made appointments. the aim within a couple of years to eventually open the clinic to the general public – which with the rapid expansion and popularity of the probono soc- will probably happen sooner than we think!

Market Law is a new project which assist local market traders with issues raised against local councils in the administration of legislations.

The clinic is run with Mayer Brown and LawWorks. We assist with determining whether a dispute is suitable to go for mediation, rather than the court.

A pioneering initiative in which law students trained in mediation provide free support to otherwise unrepresented parties to mediation.

First year students are given the opportunity to train as mediators with the organisation Resolve.

Existing undergraduate students act as mentors to approximately 50 A Level students each year from local schools and colleges.

Students have a chance to research, write and present mock trials to a variety of groups.

Another new project – for those of you that aren’t familiar - Opportunity International are a Microfinance Charity offering loans, insurance and savings to poor people in developing countries. They operate in 28 countries around the world. They currently have over 1.2 million charitable loans out to poor entrepreneurs. 98% of loans are repaid. 85% of those loans are given to women. The charity has huge scope for meaningful projects.

The Opportunity International project at King's is firstly about raising awareness on behalf of the charity and fundraising. And secondly about creating a network of students to support the charity in the future – thus we hope to collaborate closely with the UCL and LSE OA projects in the future.

Intellectual property project

Oxford law students assist local solicitors with fixed-fee legal aid cases by interviewing clients  and drafting client statements, enabling the solicitors to focus on the legal aspects of the case.

A group of law post-graduate and Law Faculty members dedicated to the practice of public interest law on a pro bono basis.

This project provides our students with an opportunity to assist families whose children have not been allocated a place at their chosen school to appeal that decision and we also assist parents whose children have been permanently excluded from school to appeal that decision.

The Law School offers an assessed Level 3 Pro 25 credit Bono module to single honours LLB students. Students are required to undertake 50 hours volunteering and complete a research project, work diary and deliver an oral presentation.

NLS offers a wide range of pro bono placements with voluntary and statutory organisations, involving different legal and law-related activities.

The 'South West Employment Rights Centre' (SWERC) is an organisation offering free advice and representation to employees (primarily those who are socially deprived).

From October 2008, the Law Clinic will commence a form of Street Law by advising incoming international students on their housing, consumer and employment rights via workshops and leaflets. We will also be running Consumer Workshops, designed to help those with a consumer issue resolve the dispute themselves and take them through writing letters, filling in the Small Claims Court form and advice for appearing.

We attend Thames Magistrates Court to provide factual representation before the Magistrates for clients. We assist these clients on council tax matters and try to help them make sure that they are not imprisoned for failure to pay council tax.

A unique collaboration between Law students, from  both Bristol Law School (UWE) and the University of Bristol Law Faculty, the Bristol CAB and the Barristers of the Western Circuit to provide the highest quality pro-bono service.

The INUK was launched in September 2004 because the problem of the wrongful conviction of innocent people was not sufficiently resolved by the creation of the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), the body set up in the wake of notorious cases.

The Innocence Project is a national litigation and public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.

Innocence Projects like ours operate at more than 20 universities in the UK at the time of writing. Our Innocence Project, like the others, is an extra-curricula pro bono legal clinic that works on real cases of prisoners maintaining innocence.

The Schools Outreach Project has been created with the aim of interacting with teenagers and younger school children to provide an educative and interesting insight into the legal issues that affect their everyday lives.

The Vacation Scheme Workshop is an informal chance for those applying for summer placements to get some tips from those who have already been through the process.

All undergraduate students can chose the volunteering module. They will undertake a voluntary placement. Many students chose to voulnteer with the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Students working voluntarily under the supervision of our in-house solicitors provide advice and representation on a full range of welfare benefits and appeals. We only see clients by appointment, usually following a referral.

The Law School Clinic is a fully integrated part of the undergraduate and postgraduate Law programmes. It consists of a generic legal advice centre open to members of the public and has 5 additional specialisms: tribunal representation; small business support (with particular emphasis on social enterprises); placements (long-term commitment to working with not for profit groups); Streetlaw; and, a law reform advice and submission service.

Students prepare and present workshops on the justice system and then mentor school or college students in role played mock trials.
