| Amicus - (King's College London
(University of London)) |
Also launched this year this is completely different to the previous project, law mentoring – which demonstrates the wide ranging and diverse projects we have and the groups of people we help. Amicus is a charity which provides free legal representation for US prisoners on death row using volunteers.
The King's branch of the Amicus project consists of 11 students
- Who have been trained to carry out legal research?
- contribute to the cases Amicus deals with, for example, by consolidating witness statements.
- They spent two weekends training to become a volunteer, one theory weekend and one practical weekend, and this training has enabled them to contribute to
A death-row case, the outcome of which has not yet been reached but Amicus has completed their involvement in the case now and the client has been appointed with a US firm to represent them –
The king’s students contributed around 5% to the final project which has enabled the US firm to have a head start on identifying the issues for appeal. Their assignments related to the motions during the trial and this was the most difficult part of the case. |

(University of London)) |
The AIM of Streetlaw enables law students to help the local community, passing on their knowledge of legal issues in a format that is both relevant and interesting to young people –
The students give presentations to many different types of groups around London on issues such as knife crime, the EU, drugs issues, human rights.
the main group we present to ARE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS
SIXTH FORM COLLEGES – mostly as the students are currently studying a-level law and this would complement their revision.
we have given a number of presentations to HOUSING ASSOCIATIONS
And we have recently gained clearance to work at BAIL HOSTELS in often challenging circumstances.
It is run in association with the City Law Firm Addleshaw Goddard.
statistics -
when probono first began, we had 88 Streetlaw volunteers –
in the 2009/2010 academic year we currently have 130 volunteers –
This is almost a 50% INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP and demonstrates the increase in knowledge amongst the student community A) that probono work can develop you existing skills and B) the enthusiasm and willingness amongst students to help others in the community.
Around 29 presentations from November 2009-to present day – and audiences vary from 10-100 people – so Streetlaw has presented to over 870 people in 5 months.
