Citizenship Foundation Magistrates' Court Mock Trial Competition
Students support local schools entered in the Competition by running mentoring sessions on the mock trial process. A number of our law school staff sit as Judges in the Competition. The event is a lot of fun and helps our students by reinforcing the advocacy skills they learn in the classroom.
The human rights unit includes a variety of student led human rights initiatives through which our students provide support to various human rights organisations.
Students are trained by the Charity to provide support to users of the Leeds Combined Courts. Students gain access to Court hearings and have the opportunity to develop their client care skills.
The Streetlaw mock trials project involves our students assisting school children to prepare for the Citizenship Foundation mock trials competition or running mock trials as a classroom exercise, independent of the competition.
The Streetlaw schools project promotes education about the law, democracy and human rights to those who would otherwise not have access to legal knowledge or education.
Delivering sessions on areas of law relevant to issues affecting prisoners. The Law School has a working relationship with HMP Lowdham Grange's Resettlement team and provides Streetlaw sessions as part of the Prison's education programme.
Providing adminstrative and emotional support to unrepresented litigants in the Employment Tribunal. Student volunteers gain first hand experience of the Tribunal process and develop key client handling skills.
