Pro Bono Activity Details - Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University

Legal Advice Clinic

Short Description

Nottingham Law School's Legal Advice Clinic provides a free initial advice, represntation and referral service to the local community.

Law students, supervised by qualified lawyers, offer advice and assistance on a number of areas of law.

Long Description

The main activity in the law school’s pro bono programme, the Legal Advice Clinic, is a well -established feature of NLS having been running now for 3 years. The clinic is situated on the ground floor of Taylor Building and runs mostly on Monday evenings during term times. The Clinic Solicitor and Supervisor is Stephanie Wootton.

Each year the clinic handles around 40 matters and around 60 students participate in the programme. Many of the cases are employment and housing/property cases but the clinic also handles some commercial matters with the support of NLS staff and commercial lawyers from Nottingham's main firms. We have direct links with NTU's Business start up project "The Hive" and provide advice to some of the fledgling businesses based there, giving advice on contractual matters, IP, property and employment issues.

IN 2008/09, we launched, as part of the clinic, the Nottingham branch of the London based charity, FRU, to enable Graduate students to provide representation to clients in Employment Tribunals. Four students were involved in the pilot in 2008/09 and we plan to extend the service over the next few years with the support of  local firms.
