An advice and representation service.

 
Long Description

This not-for-profit organisation is an advice and resource centre for unemployed and low-waged people in Birmingham. In addition to employment and careers advice, the Centre provides welfare benefits and employment advice and representation before Social Security Tribunals and Employment Tribunals.

 

Aims

This placement provides an additional free legal advice service run by BVC student advocates who advise and represent clients before the Social Security and Child Support Appeals Tribunal and Employment Tribunal under the supervision of BTUCCU staff and qualified barristers and/or solicitors.

 

Nature of pro bono work

Students work in teams and prepare cases and represent at a range of case-management, pre-trial and full hearings. Student advocates gain experience in legal research, drafting, conferencing, managing files, negotiation, liaison with the tribunal services, case preparation and advocacy.
